History of Gold Coast

When Captain Cook sailed past Gold Coast, it was nothing but a long open beach with sandy ridges and pockets of rainforest. Before the Europeans arrived in the area, it was inhabited by an Aboriginal community, which gave the area its unique language, ceremonies, activities and legends.

The region was first visited by surveyors in the 1840s when it opened to different activities such as cotton farming, cedar logging, and sugarcane plantation. Two of the earliest settlement started with Southport and Nerang during the 1850s when it started to gain popularity as a coastal holiday area. In 1887, Southport became one of the most populated towns in the area, with 1000 people.

It was only in the 1950s that Gold Coast became popular as a popular holiday city when WWII returned servicemen and their families started settling in the region. It was also during this time when development in the city started, and what it looks like today started to take shape.

Best Time of the Year to Visit the Gold Coast

Gold Coast receives sunshine for about 300 days every year. However, the best time to visit this beautiful city is between May and October. It is the perfect time to indulge in beach activities and various boat tours. From the end of January till February, the city receives heavy rainfall, and humidity is quite high, which can be quite uncomfortable. The days are pretty sunny from June to August, but the temperature can drop to 11 degrees at night. For whale watching, June to August is the ideal time.

November to April is the best time to enjoy some of the best deals on flights and accommodation. However, you won’t find a lot of boat tours or festivals going on during these months except around Christmas and New Year. That being said, Gold Coast is a destination you can visit any time throughout the year, with a wide range of outdoor activities available during different seasons.
